Financing a phone at Mobilaty: what to know

Mobile phones are the fastest-growing consumer finance line in Egypt. How buying a phone on instalments from a specialist retailer works, what to verify, and how to tell a real offer from a repackaged price.

Mobilaty is one of Egypt's well-known phone retail chains, and phones are the fastest-growing line in consumer finance: 8.6%, up from 5.9%, per the Financial Regulatory Authority.

This article is a general buyer's guide: how to finance a phone at a specialist retailer, what to verify, and how to tell a real offer.

Note: this is not issued by Mobilaty. Offers and terms change — confirm with the branch.

Why a specialist chain?

1. Range. More tiers and models than a general shop.

2. Invoice and warranty. Official chains sell with an invoice and an agent's warranty — the most important difference from the informal market.

3. More than one payment route in the same store, usually.

4. After-sales service — replacement and repair with a clear path.

The available routes

1. An instalment app — you learn your limit at home and spend it at participating branches.

2. A shop plan — arranged during the same visit.

3. A bank programme — if you hold a credit card, usually with longer terms.

The full comparison is in phone instalments: bank, shop or app?.

What to verify before paying

The invoice and the ID: what actually protects you
The invoice and the ID: what actually protects you

1. The final cash price in writing for the same model and storage.

2. The total due — payment × term.

3. The device is new and sealed, opened in front of you.

4. An agent's warranty in Egypt — not a "shop warranty."

5. The invoice in your name, with the serial number on it.

6. The model year and storage — "same name" isn't the same device.

7. No quiet add-ons — a case, a screen protector or insurance folded in without you asking.

8. The late fee in pounds — there is no binding legal cap.

How to tell a real offer

A genuine offer passes two tests:

Test one: the total (payment × term) compared against the lowest cash price in the market — not against the shop's price.

Test two: the offer survives you walking out and returning tomorrow. Anything described as "today only" usually isn't in your favour.

There's a difference between a real discount and a base price raised then discounted from. The easiest way to tell: check the model's price at two online retailers before you travel.

Documents

With instalment apps, usually: a valid national ID + a selfie + a mobile number in your name. No bank statement or proof of income in most cases.

With the bank route: a credit card and more documentation.

Storage and tier

This is where money is spent needlessly most often.

Storage: 128GB is enough for most people. If your current storage still has room, the upgrade isn't needed, and photos and video can move to cloud storage at far less than the price difference.

Tier: the gap between tiers looks small divided across months, but it's the same gap. Choose the device on need, then choose the cheapest way to pay for it.

Your rights

Licensed providers must disclose, before you contract, the financing amount, fees, annual rate, administrative costs and total due.

Since September 2025 they cannot charge on the unused portion of your limit.

Reporting to I-Score is mandatory once your limit is approved — paying on time builds your record.

The comparison in numbers

A phone at EGP 18,000 cash:

PlanPaymentTotalCost above cash
3 months6,25018,750750
5 months3,85019,2501,250
12 months1,65019,8001,800
24 months95022,8004,800

The figures are illustrative and offers change. But the meaning holds: the smallest payment isn't the cheapest — the last row's payment is under a sixth of the first, and its total is EGP 4,050 higher.

Three minutes before you enter the branch

1. Know exactly which model you need — the name, the storage, the year.

2. Look up its price at two online retailers and write down the lowest.

3. Know your available limit if you're using an instalment app.

People who walk in knowing those three things pay less — not because they have a better offer, but because they can judge the offer in front of them in a second.

Recurring mistakes

1. Relying on the salesperson's description of the model. Check the device details in settings against the box.

2. Approving the total by ear. Ask for it in writing.

3. Adding accessories to the financed amount. A case and a screen protector cost less paid in cash than financed.

4. Choosing the longest term for the smallest payment. It's costlier overall — know that while you're choosing.

5. Not writing down the first payment date. Find it out and set a reminder two days before.

After the purchase

1. Photograph the invoice and keep it — it's your reference for the warranty.

2. Record the serial number somewhere other than the device itself.

3. Write down the payment schedule and the agreed total.

4. Enable the device lock and its tracking service.

Every payment on time builds your I-Score record — which is what opens larger amounts and longer terms later.

Formal market versus informal

There's a parallel phone market in Egypt at lower prices, tempting especially in the expensive tiers. The difference isn't only price:

Official chainInformal market
InvoiceIn your name, with the serial numberUsually none
WarrantyAgent's, in Egypt"Shop warranty" or none
FinancingAvailableUsually unavailable
ReplacementA clear policyDepends on the person
PriceHigherLower

If you're financing the amount over months, the formal market is the only practical option — because financing requires an invoice in the first place, and because a large amount without a warranty is an uncalculated risk.

The price gap between the two looks tempting, but the cost of repairing an out-of-warranty device eats it easily.

Where Lucid fits

Lucid has a dedicated phone product — Lucid Mobile — in partnership with Mobilaty. The limit reaches around EGP 50,000, plans run two to five months, and the decision takes under 10 minutes with an ID and a selfie.

Plainly: our terms are short, and higher tiers may exceed the limit. If you need 12 or 24 months, a bank programme or a consumer finance company suits you better. Coverage is Cairo, Giza and Alexandria, and there is a late fee.

Confirm with the branch before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mobilaty accept instalments?

Large phone chains in Egypt offer instalment routes, and some accept instalment apps. Offers change — confirm with the branch directly.

How do I finance a phone at a shop?

Choose the model, get its final cash price in writing, ask about the plans and each plan's total, and compare before approving.

What documents are required?

With apps, usually a valid national ID, a selfie and a mobile number in your name. The bank route asks for a card and more documentation.

Is it possible without a credit card?

Yes. Most instalment apps don't ask for one. See instalments without a credit card.

Does financing raise the phone's price?

Usually there's a difference, and it grows with the term. Multiply payment by term and compare against the lowest cash price in the market.

How do I confirm the device is genuine?

It should be new and sealed, opened in front of you, with an invoice in your name carrying the serial number, and an agent's warranty in Egypt.

Does financing affect the warranty?

No. The warranty follows the device and the invoice, not the payment method.

Will they ask for a down payment?

It varies by offer. A down payment lowers both the payment and the total.

128GB or 256GB?

Check your current storage. If it isn't full, 128GB is enough, and the difference can be covered by cheaper cloud storage.

Can a used phone be financed?

Rarely on the formal route, because financing requires an invoice and an agent's warranty.

Is this reported to I-Score?

Yes. Reporting is mandatory once your limit is approved.

How do I know an offer isn't good?

When nobody gives you the total in writing, when the price changes as soon as you say "I'll finance it," or when you're pressed to decide today.

Can I sell my old phone and top up?

Yes, and it lowers the financed amount, the payment and the total together.

Do all branches accept instalments?

Not necessarily. Confirm with the branch you plan to visit.

Where else besides phone chains?

Across many categories. See our guide to where to pay in instalments in Egypt.

What if I'm going to miss a payment?

Contact the provider before the due date. Late payment is recorded and carries a fee with no binding legal cap.
